Public art in belgrade
as an an international, interdisciplinary, scientific, research and educational program public art & public space has several strategic segments:
PaPs research is executed through the PaPslab research laboratory, by initiating and participating in national and international research projects, conferences, etc.
PaPs edu is implemented through the realization of PaPs academic curriculum classes at master’s and doctoral studies as part of regular classes at the university of belgrade, faculty of architecture, as well as other schools in serbia and abroad where PaPs researchers participate as guest or visiting professors.
PaPs projects are non-profit, participatory, interdisciplinary and are realized through cooperation with national and local administrations and academic and non-academic institutions in serbia and abroad, from all three sectors of society.
PaPs publishing is completed through publishing own publications, author’s texts in other authors’ publications, representative journals and conference proceedings.
PaPs support is celebrates exchange, giving and receiving.
PaPs, as outlined in the academic courses curriculums, aime to familiarize students with the various types, forms, and implementation conditions of architectural, urban, and artistic projects within public spaces. these projects are typically executed through interdisciplinary collaboration among artists, architects, planners, and designers. additionally, PaPs explore the diverse forms of public and local community participation in the planning, design, and execution processes of such projects.
in practical classes, we delve into the characteristics of the public domain within the realm of public spaces, examining opportunities for enhancement through diverse artistic, architectural, and urban planning initiatives. we explore how the fields of architecture and urbanism can contribute meaningfully to the revitalization, activation, and (re)design of public urban spaces, employing various artistic methods and forms of expression. we define both general and specific characteristics of the broader thematic field, along with problematic sub-units within our focus area.
ususally, adequate case studies from domestic and foreign practices are thoroughly examined in a comparative analysis. existing development strategies and programs for improvement projects are identified, analyzed, and evaluated. additionally, the potential and impacts of implementing specific original projects are closely monitored.
as a result of the covid-19 pandemic’s restrictions, our activities did not entail comparative analyses of case studies or evaluations of strategies and programs. implementation and monitoring were also impractical due to the unusual behavioral patterns observed in public spaces. our efforts were solely focused on research, with no implementation phase, and our primary focus was investigating public art practices in belgrade.
the research was funded based on two criteria: topic-specific or location-specific. it encompassed the following research categories concerning public art in belgrade: festivals and manifestations, artistic installations in open public spaces, storefronts in belgrade, mural art in belgrade, squatting and public art, public art of belgrade fortress, public art in vračar, public art in savski venac (center), formal (public) artistic practices in stari grad, public art in the northern part of novi beograd, public art in the old (central) core of zemun, and public art as an identity factor of zemun.
the research findings are in the publication, still in compilation.
